About Infertility

This page is intended as a summary and general information regarding investigation and management of fertility. It provides particular reference to our local management options.

Involuntary infertility is a worldwide problem that causes considerable anguish and unhappiness
It effects approximately 10 – 15% of couples and is defined as’ inability to conceive’ despite one year of unprotected intercourse. Up to 75% of couples will conceive within a year and up to 90% in two years.

The incidence and causes of infertility vary considerably across the world. In the UK the causes of infertility are male factor, tubal disease, unexplained, ovulatory disfunction and endometriosis.

Investigations
There has been a general consensus to start infertility investigations after one year. However, this may be shorter or longer in individual circumstances. The investigations involve both partners and include semen analysis, assessment of ovulation, and tubal patency.(tubes are open). other investigations may be considered in individual circumstance.

Further guidance can be obtained from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, who have produced evidence based guidelines for "the initial investigation and management of the infertile couple" and the management of infertility in secondary care. Both are available from the RCOG, and are also available from their website.
