Preimplantation genetic diagnosis

PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) can be used to determine if embryos created after IVF have normal chromosomes.

Sometimes, patients are aware that there is a family genetic predisposition to a genetic disorder (they carry the gene). If they are considering starting a family, or they have an existing child with a genetic disorder and wish to have more children that are not affected by this, they can consider PGD.

PGD is a technqiue in which we can assess the embryos just by looking at a single cell from each embryo. 'Normal' embryos are then replaced back into the uterus. We have a link to Guys Hospital in London to be able to carry out this technique.

All PGD is carried out under the direction from the HFEA.
